As of June 17th, [[2009]], CitiesXL officially opened a closed beta version of the game. Quite a few members of the [[SC4]] Community got a beta key, either through the official lottery or a competition that was held over at [[Simtropolis]].

The website was launched on the 13th October 2007 (under the name Cities Unlimited), and when it's first birthday came this year the site got an upgrade.
