Garbage is exactly the same as it is in the real world, and you are left to clean up after your messy Sims and provide a municipal waste infrastructure to remove garbage from your city. Garbage is constantly generated as part of the game simulation, and therefore needs an ongoing disposal solution. If garbage starts to collect in the streets, it will have a negative impact on land values and desirability.

The game has three basic ways of handling garbage:

  • Landfills are the most basic garbage solution, and are zoned areas where garbage collects. Sims do not want to live near landfills.
  • Recycling Centers reduce the garbage output of your city. You cannot recycle your way to a clean city, but they will keep your landfills from filling up too quickly.
  • Incinerators are an alternative to landfills as a way to dispose of garbage. However, they generate pollution. Waste-to-Energy Incinerators will turn your garbage into power.

In addition to the default game garbage facilities, several custom garbage facilities have been created. Many of these function as alternatives to landfills and incinerators, and remove garbage from your city. Some take after recycling centers and simply reduce the garbage created by your city.
